Great Tips For Training Your Dog

Dog training can be a learning experience for your dog but you can also learn important things as well. This article can help you make the most of training your dog. You will find that your time spent training your dog will have benefits for both of you for years to come.

Understand that a dog's thinking is simple compared to human thinking. If you call your dog and he doesn't come immediately because he's distracted by a squirrel, don't scold him when he does show up. He only knows that he is coming to you, and you are scolding him for doing so. He doesn't understand you're angry about the squirrel, or that he didn't come to you quickly enough.

Feed your dog twice per day (or number of times your veterinarian recommends), and then take the food away after 15 minutes. When giving treats, ask your dog to sit or lay down, so they understand treats should be earned. When your pet understands you are the food provider and treats are not simply free, they see you as the leader.

Be consistent at all times when training your dog. Dogs need repetition when it comes to learning and remembering rules and rituals. If you are consistent one day, but not the next day, it confuses your dog. Dogs understand consistent black and white training, not various shades of gray.

Stay calm. Your dog gets his cues from you, and when you start acting agitated and upset, his actions will be sure to follow. Dogs can sense when you are uncomfortable. If you act calm and in control, you convey a disposition to your dog that allows him to relax as well.

When you begin training a dog, never assume they will not bite you just because you are a human and you think you are the leader. And untrained dog may think you are part of his pack, but may think he is the leader. Understanding what alpha behavior you need to show your dog will help your dog understand you are the leader. When your dog doesn't understand your human behavior, even a calm dog can bite you.

When training your dog to fetch a ball, show him you are the leader by making him bring the ball to you at all times. If your dog drops the ball nearby and you walk to pick the ball up, your dog assumes he is the leader. Teaching the dog that he must bring the ball to you each time helps your dog to understand what is wanted of him at all times with the ball.

When you are training your dog, do not blame it for bad behavior if it is sick. You should never force a dog to do obedience training when it is not feeling well. Take your dog to the vet to see what is making it sick, and put off the training until it is doing better.

Make sure everyone around the dog knows your rules. It can be confusing for a dog if mom says not to give him food but the kids are sneaking food to him under the table. Make sure that everyone who spends time with the dog knows that you are trying to train him so that he gets consistent messages.

Dog Training

An important rule of thumb in dog training is that people lead and dogs follow. Never let your dog lead you around while it is on its leash. Make short, sharp, well defined corrections with the dog's lead to bring it back to heel. Your dog must learn that you are the one directing things and it is not.

Remember that your dog training is going on 24 hours a day. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you are only training your dog during your obedience classes and practice sessions. Your dog is watching and learning from you during every interaction you have with it, so be sure you are always reinforcing good behavior.

A common misconception in dog training is that you should punish bad behavior. If you punish bad behavior, you are actually reinforcing that behavior. You strong reaction will imprint whatever the dog has just done on its mind. Instead, ignore bad behavior, redirect to some good behavior and then reward that.

An important key to effective dog training is to always enforce the first command you give to your dog. It is a mistake to keep repeating the command over and over again. The dog needs to learn that a command requires instant obedience. Do not give the dog the opportunity to disobey. Enforce the first command, and then promptly give a reward and praise.

As was stated previously, dog training can be a learning experience for you and your dog. By taking the advice in this article to heart, you can ensure a bond between your dog and yourself. This time will be well spent and will create a friendship that will benefit both of you.

My Chihuahua seems uninterested in playing fetch and leads me on the leash all of the time! He also has bitten my Son twice, is still not yet totally potty trained and he will never eat his food over his bowl. He always drags it to the carpet or onto my couch! How can I possibly change these behaviors at this late stage? I adopted him like this at age one and now he is two and a half.
